We read the entry routes of every company in the Metanoia opportunity database. The shape of the result says more than any single vacancy board.

What 768 companies tell us about where the doors are

What is happening

This piece is computed live from Metanoia’s own opportunity database, the same data behind The Range (Explore), so every number below is checkable inside the product. It is a map of our database, and only of our database: a curated view of commonly-targeted employers, not a census of the labour market.

Three shapes stand out. Function doors are unevenly distributed: finance, operations and data roles appear across nearly every industry, while design and product concentrate in technology. Trainee tracks cluster in Indonesian banking, FMCG and state-owned enterprises. And documented hiring processes remain rare; most companies publish nothing, which is why provenance labels matter.

Why it matters

If your target function only has doors in certain industries, that is worth knowing before you aim, and if a function opens doors everywhere, it is a more resilient first skill-set than its glamour suggests.

What this means for you

StudentCount the doors of the function you are studying toward; breadth now is pivot insurance later.
Fresh graduateTarget the industries where your function’s doors actually are, not just where its glamour is.
Early professionalFunction breadth prices your pivot: moving within a wide function costs less than changing function.
Experienced professionalWide-door functions read as resilient seniority; narrow ones concentrate risk in one industry’s cycle.

What to do

  1. Read the chart below against your own target function: count its doors, note its industries.
  2. Treat function breadth as career insurance: if two directions attract you equally, the one with doors in more industries costs less to pivot from later.
  3. Open any bar in The Range (Explore); the underlying companies, roles and hiring stages are all inspectable.

Why state-owned enterprises hire the way they do

Joint recruitment, published eligibility rules, values interviews and placement anywhere in the archipelago are not bureaucracy for its own sake. Each follows from what a state-owned enterprise is. Understanding that makes the process predictable.

Regional cities as a first move

Jakarta concentrates headquarters, competition and rent. A first role in Surabaya, Medan, Makassar or Balikpapan can mean more responsibility sooner, if you choose the employer for the right reason.
