How to read a company in one evening

What is happening

Candidates over-research breadth and under-research the four things that change decisions: How does this company make money? What is it betting on next? What would I actually do all day? And how does it treat the people who do that?

Each question has a best source: annual reports and investor pages for the money; official announcements for the bets; job descriptions read closely (the verbs, not the adjectives) for the work; and the texture of employee accounts, read critically, plural, never one review, for the treatment.

Why it matters

Interviewers can tell within minutes whether your research answered questions or collected trivia, and your own decision quality depends on the same four answers.

What this means for you

StudentRun the four boxes on employers at career fairs; one page beats a stack of brochures.
Fresh graduateDo the evening routine before every application in your top ten, it doubles as interview preparation.
Early professionalApply the same four questions to your own employer yearly; box two tells you whether to stay.
Experienced professionalAt senior levels, box two is the interview: come with a view on the company’s next bet.

What to do

  1. One evening, four boxes, one page. Write a sentence per question; if you cannot, that is your remaining research, precisely scoped.
  2. Turn box two into your interview question: asking a specific question about the company’s next bet outperforms every generic "what is the culture like".
  3. Date your notes. Companies change; research from last year is a rumour about the present.

Do it with the pillars

Why state-owned enterprises hire the way they do

Joint recruitment, published eligibility rules, values interviews and placement anywhere in the archipelago are not bureaucracy for its own sake. Each follows from what a state-owned enterprise is. Understanding that makes the process predictable.

Regional cities as a first move

Jakarta concentrates headquarters, competition and rent. A first role in Surabaya, Medan, Makassar or Balikpapan can mean more responsibility sooner, if you choose the employer for the right reason.
